As the sun rises high
And the circling bird’s cry
Is the only sound I ever hear
As the barn shadow falls
On the old cottage walls
I know why this place calls me each year
For it’s here I find peace
Where the world’s sorrows cease
And my heart is released from its toil
Where the tree offers fruits
The vine sends its shoots
And the wild cherry roots in the soil
And I leave well behind
All those things that I find
Cause me pain and distress and despair
They don’t travel with me
When I sail ‘cross the sea
And drive down to La Jeusseliniere
My friends bring their song
And their laughter along
Both belong on the sweet summer air
Wine warms the night
‘Till the stars in delight
Shine so bright on La Jeusseliniere
And when winter brings cold
So my body feels old
And the ice and snow hold us in thrall
I will still close my eyes
Till my freed spirit flies
Where the circling bird cries for us all
And I’ll leave well behind
All those things that I find
Cause me pain and distress and despair
They won’t travel with me when I sail ‘cross the sea
And drive down to La Jeusseliniere
They won’t travel with me
When I sail ‘cross the sea
And drive down to La Jeusseliniere

Somewhere in the Stars
05:07
|
|||
Somewhere in the stars, somewhere that isn't here
There are buildings without bars
Lives lived without fear
Somewhere in the stars, somewhere that isn't here
There are bodies without scars
Loved ones always near
And sometimes in a dream, I can see it shine
See its golden gleam, feel it could be mine
A field of nature's grain
A windmill on a hill
Then I wake again
And I'm here still
I would grieve if I could cry
I would leave if I could fly
I would crawl through all the mud and rain
If I could see my home again
But somewhere in the stars, somewhere that isn't here
No leaders, kings, or czars
No missile, gun, or spear
Somewhere in the stars, somewhere that isn't here
Everyone can sing, and everyone can hear
End sometimes in a dream, I can see it shine
See its golden gleam, feel it could be mine,
Each day a day of peace
A day of your goodwill,
Then the dreamings cease
And I'm here still
But somewhere in the dark, somewhere beyond this night
There glows that tiny spark
That could be grown to light
Yes somewhere in the dark, there must be something more
Than all this blood and rage
This madness we call war
And sometimes in a dream, I can see it shine
See its golden gleam, feel it could be mine
All the gods asleep
So no one has to kill
Then I hear the children weep
'Cause they're here still
But somewhere in the stars
Somewhere that isn’t here...

Found and loved
04:19
|
|||
When she slammed the door and left that day
He stood to watch her go
Taking all his hopes and dreams away
With not much left to show
The kids she'd send one long weekend
She'd tell him where and when
Oh may those who've loved and been thrown away
Be found and loved again
And when her calls were not returned,
She knew this time he'd gone
He'd tried before, but now she'd learned
She was not the only one
With pain inside, she vowed with pride
She'd never needed men
Oh may those who've loved and been thrown away
Be found and loved again
Found and loved, found and loved,
Found and loved again
May those who've loved and been thrown away
Be found and loved again
Those who leave can't count the cost
Those who grieve know what's been lost
So when they met they danced the dance
The hurt ones always do
As both said no to one more chance
But thought it might be you
So as we pray that come what may
Our hopes will find them then
Oh may those who've loved and been thrown away
Be found and loved again.
May those who've loved and been thrown away
Be found and loved again

The house of your dreams
03:19
|
|||
It’s costing a fortune the house of your dreams
Deceptively spacious with through lounge and beams
Then you drive out to view but it's not what it seems
They never tell you that
It’s next to a pig farm, it leans to the right
The quarry behind it is worked day and night
And the new power station’s a wonderous sight
They never tell you that
It’s tasteful, proportioned, and sought after too
Charming and rural and smart
Executive home with exceptional view
Its garden will soon win your heart
But the pleasure of weeding easily cloys
Dogs from next door were born to make noise
And the doors and the windows are painted turquoise
They never tell you that
Herbaceous, vivacious, audacious and sweet
Delicious, auspicious, ambitious, a treat
But it’s right where the bypass and motorway meet
They never tell you that
But still we go hunting for oak and for beam
The agents still sell us the hope and the dream
It’s a dwelling of status to bring us esteem
Have we seen the fishpond, the gurgling stream?
So we buy their nightmare and they get the cream
They never tell you that
Try renting a flat

The role you choose
03:05
|
|||
When you live your life as Charlie Brown
You sometimes smile you mostly frown
You sometimes float you mostly drown
'Cause you are Charlie Brown
When you miss the chances, you miss the clues
You know just how it feels to lose
And you know that is the role you choose
Then you are Charlie Brown
Yes, you are Charlie Brown my friend
You are Charlie Brown
And though you try to fly it right
Still your kite comes down
When you live your life as Charlie Brown
You play King Lear, they call you clown
They say there's one in every town
Who's name is Charlie Brown
When you pitch that ball it comes right back
So you defend while they attack
Then you find a quiet place to crack
'Cause you are Charlie Brown
Still your kite comes down
Still your kite, still your kite,
Still your kite comes down
Good old Charlie Brown.
When you live your life as Charlie Brown
You know you'll never wear that crown
You know you'll never find renown
'Cause you are Charlie Brown
Oh, Mister Schultz, you know me well
I see it in the tales you tell
For you know that heaven's made in hell
When you are Charlie Brown
Yes, you know that heaven's made in hell
When you are Charlie Brown

Impressions

When Prussians came to take the house
I could not stop them then
They filled the rooms with horses
With sheep as well as men
I tried for poor old Camille’s sake
For Monsieur Monet too
But they were Prussian soldiers
There was little I could do
Camille had fled to England
Monsieur Monet followed on
When war came both made certain
That they never saw a gun
They left me to look after
All the things they left behind
But so much in so small a house
The troops were sure to find
The store room full of paintings
Fifteen years of Camille’s life
Pictures of our village
Of his children and his wife
And when the rain made good earth mud
And rivers of the lanes
The soldiers laid them end to end
And walked on canvassed frames
The colours and the pigments merged
And Monsieur Monet’s blue
Joined the reds, the greens, the browns
To form another hue
And poor Camille’s 'plein air' became
A blackened, blasted land
As boots tore holes with muddied soles
Sent from the fatherland
They burned the rest for daily warmth
The paint and oil were good
And gave more heat to blistered feet
Than shower dampened wood
But when they left I tried to clean
The pictures that I found
By Camille and his friend Monet
Deep trodden in the ground
But why I bothered I don’t know
Camille’s a silly fool
No one buys his paintings
They’re all laughing as a rule
And Monsieur Monet’s eyes can’t see
He’s never finished yet
No details, just impressions
Is the best that he can get
When they return and find the truth
Maybe they’ll see the light
And do an honest job for once
It never has seemed right
A life spent painting pictures
We all wonder why they try
See this one here, yes, take it sir,
A Monsieur Monet sky
That no one wants to buy

The pocket song
02:09
|
|||
Oh, my mother's in my pocket and she'll never go away
She tells me that I have to keep my mobile on each day
And 'where you going?' 'what you doing?' is all she'll ever say
Oh my mother's in my pocket and she'll never go away
Now my wife is in my pocket and she'll never go away
She tells me that I have to keep my mobile on each day
And 'where you going?' 'who you seeing?' is all she'll ever say
Oh my wife is in my pocket and she'll never go away
See us on the street, the train
See our faces etched with strain
Not a minute of our own
Lives lived on a mobile phone
Now my boss is in my pocket and he'll never go away
He tells me that I have to keep my mobile on each day
'Where you going?' 'how's the selling?' is all he'll ever say
Oh my boss is in my pocket and he'll never go away
Soon I'll empty all my pockets
And I'll throw them all away
These gadgets and these gizmos
That have taken all my day
And where I'm going, what I'm doing, only I will say
When I empty all my pockets and I throw them all away
Someday
Someday
One day

Sons and daughters

Sons and daughters leaving
Going far away
See them sadly waving
Wishing they could stay
All they see about them
Darkness and decay
Sons and daughters leaving
Going far away
Job in South Australia
Out along a bay
House with half an acre
Mortgage they can pay
Sandy beach and blue sky
Safe for children’s play
Job in South Australia
Out along a bay
Letting go the children
Telling them goodbye
See you in the summer
Yes, I know you’ll try
A better life for certain
Break the bonds that tie
Letting go the children
Telling them goodbye
Should have gone in ‘80
Things were different then
Now you’re so much older
Couldn’t start again
Smile and say it’s all right
That was way back when
Should have gone in ‘80
Things were different then
So you’re on your own now
That’s the way life goes
Home’s too big and empty
Bid for bungalows
Learn to send an email
Leaving out life’s woes
So you’re on your own now
That’s the way life goes
With sons and daughters leaving
Going far away
See them sadly waving
Wishing they could stay
All they see about them
Darkness and decay
Sons and daughters leaving
Going far away
Sons and daughters leaving
For a better day

Golden Pennies
03:26
|
|||
Golden pennies, see them shining in the sun
Golden pennies, lying there for anyone
Pan the river, bless the waters as they run
For golden pennies and the freedom that you’ve won
There’s adventure waiting in this promised land
Leave old England, take the future in your hand
Leave your troubles on that cold and distant shore
Here’s Australia, with golden pennies by the score
Golden pennies
It’s hard on a woman when she gets out here
It’s hard on a woman, I know
But there’s something special ‘bout the new frontier
And it takes someone special to go
Will you have me, will you be a poor man’s bride
Will you love me, will you stay here by my side
And build a country with our hope and with our pride
I won’t fail you though there’s others who have tried
For golden pennies

The last train
03:34
|
|||
It was the last train of the evening
The sun was setting low
As we pulled out of the station
I glanced up to see its glow
In the window a reflection
Of a face I used to know
In an old life, in a young life
We both lived so long ago
She could dance from dusk till dawning
She could twist and shout with joy
And I was hers forever, her first and only boy.
But in that old life, in that young life
I was far too smart to know
That the one regret I'd harbour yet
Was that I let her go
She was reading as I watched her
Till she turned another page
From the lines upon her face now
You could never tell her age
But I knew I looked so different
Time just hadn't been that kind
On my face were etched the failures
Of the life I'd left behind
As we slowed she closed her novel
Stood to take her suitcase down
Turned and paused and stared at me
Then shadowed by a frown
Shook her head, took her case,
Moved towards the door,
Another time, another place,
But leaving me once more

You knew we were coming
02:41
|
|||
You knew we were coming for 60 years now
You knew we were coming and you told us how
You’d greet us and treat us and keep every vow
Cause you knew we were coming for 60 years now
You knew we were coming and we’d need your care
You knew we were coming, we all paid our share
But what we all dreamed of is now our nightmare
But you knew we were coming and we’d need your care
We are the babies you counted and grew
The boomers who’ve worked 40 years just for you
For your golden handshakes and your knighthoods too
And now we’re demanding you give us our due
Yes you knew we were coming, Maggie and Ted
Lord Home and Wilson and Callaghan said
There’d be a pension, a nurse and a bed
‘Cause you knew we were coming, Maggie and Ted
You knew we were coming, and now we are here
Be patient you tell but one thing is clear
Patience wears thin when there’s hope and there’s fear
But you knew we were coming, and now we are here
‘Cause now we’re arriving, the glad to be grey
We’re the kids of the 60’s, don’t stand in our way
We’ve marched before now we’ll have our say
‘Cause now we’re arriving, the glad to be grey
And you knew we were coming for 60 years now
You knew we were coming but you never said how
You’d cheat us, defeat us and break every vow
But you knew were coming, and here we are now
Yes you knew we were coming,
And here we are now!

BILLY
There’s a sunset that we’ve never see
Over mountains where we’ve never been
And I’d like to make that long long climb
‘Cause I’ve waited for a long long time
SANDRA
There’s a poem that we’ve never read
Saying all the things we’ve never said
And I’d like to make those verses rhyme
‘Cause I’ve waited for a long, long time
TOGETHER
Could we change our lives you and me
Be the lovers we were meant to be
Are we trapped in days that just tick by
Or could we take our chance and try
BILLY
There’s a door that opens every day
Let’s not close it let’s just slip away
Don’t look back it’s all a pantomime
And it has been for a long, long time
SANDRA
There’s a journey that we’ve never made
Never taken, always been afraid
Don’t you think that it would be a crime
If we didn’t for a long, long time
TOGETHER
Could we change our lives you and me
Be the lovers we were meant to be
Are we trapped in days that just tick by
Or could we take our chance and try
There’s a sunset that we’ve never seen
Over mountains where we’ve never been
So let’s go and start that long, long climb
And let’s make it last a long, long time

Fruit and veg
02:40
|
|||
Times are hard, times are tough
It's time for change, we've had enough
Let me say, there's a way,
To improve your every day
It's a simple recipe,
It suits the way I like to be
You know life can be so sweet,
When you don't eat meat.
Please don't cut that throat for me,
I'll eat mushroom fricassee
Wheat and corn, you ain't born,
Till you've tried some home fried quorn
Steamed or stuffed, creamed or puffed
Glazed or braised, ain't that enough
Veg can be a treat, when you don't eat meat.
Mister butcher, spare that lamb,
Please don’t turn that pig to ham
We can solve all farming's ills,
If we stick to pasta quills
There's no need for blood and murder,
Just chomp on this nice bean burger
And here's a baby beet, don't eat meat.
Boil that rice, oh that's nice,
Pancakes you could just eat twice
An aubergine, a butter bean,
Something green, I feel so clean
Mangoes, apples, melons, limes,
Add the good fruit of the vines
It's all great to eat, bin the meat
Let's let lambs baa and bleat,
Don't mince up that udder teat
Cows and calves don't eat meat,
So why do we, let me repeat
There's a simple remedy,
So why don't you join with me
And life could be so neat
Don't eat meat

Old face
05:01
|
|||
Milly has an old face
She calls it her new face
Milly has an old face
Showing all its years
Remembering the heartaches
Harsh words and remakes
Treasuring the keepsakes
That help to hide the fears
Yes, Milly has an old face
Smiling at the retraced
Memory of an embrace
That was always there
When life was something grown in
Love was sometimes thrown in
But never ever shown in
A place with others near
In old eyes the young girl dances
Takes her chances
While she may
And in old eyes
The young man watches
As time notches one more day
And Billy has an old face
Moving at an old pace
Not afraid of disgrace
Bringing up the rear
Taking time for musing
Not afraid of losing
Happy in his choosing
To be a mutineer
Yes, Billy has an old face
Living in an old place
Searching for the misplaced
Memories very dear
Telling all the tall tales
Storm wind and sea gales
Lost oars and torn sails
Till the glass said clear
In the mirror there's an old face
Waiting for the young face
In the mirror there's an old face
Showing all its years
We'll remember our heartaches
Harsh words and remakes
We'll treasure the keepsakes
That help to hide our fears
When we're an old, old face
With lines like the finest lace
Folded in times embrace
Proud of our old, old face
When we're an old, old face
With lines like the finest lace
Folded in time's embrace
Proud of our old, old face
